Located approximately 240 kilometres north east of Nairobi, the Lewa/Borana landscape offers guests the trip of a lifetime with its unforgettable combination of scenery, superb game viewing, excellent hospitality and conservation education.
Their holistic approach commits tourism, livestock and other commercial enterprises to building local livelihoods and enhance ecosystem integrity. Borana has assisted the funding, development, marketing and management of community-owned conservation initiatives like Tassia, Oreteti and Il N’gwesi and they work collaboratively with the Kenya Wildlife Service to ensure that their neighbours are not adversely affected by human wildlife conflict.
Set amidst 90,000 acres of sprawling savannah, the Lewa-Borana-Landscape boasts some of the most spectacular views in northern Kenya. With one of the highest wildlife densities in Kenya including 10% and 14% of the country’s black and white rhinos respectively, the Conservancies are also home to the world's single largest population of Grevy's zebras. It is also the best place to spot herds of elephants and buffalo, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, more than 400 species of birds and if lucky, a pack of wild dogs.
The landscape’s birdlife is very impressive as well. With over 350 species to spot, this really is a paradise for keen birders. They include grebes, pelicans, cormorants, herons and egrets, storks, ibises and spoonbills, flamingos, ducks and geese, loads of raptors to name a few, remember to pack the binoculars!
We were able to see many black and white rhinos including a baby that was about 24 hours old with the umbilical cord still visible. We saw all the “Big Five” during our time there but the real highlight are the rhinos.
