This region is home to three vastly different parks, Hell’s Gate National Park is just a few minutes from Naivasha and is a scenic landscape that was the inspiration behind Disney’s film The Lion King. A few minutes away is the Longonot National Park and home of Mount Longonot, a stratovolcano, which towers across the landscape. Its name is derived from the Maasai word Oloonong'ot, meaning "mountains of many spurs" or "steep ridges".

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya outside the town of Naivasha in Nakuru County which lies approximately 96km north west of Nairobi. The name derives from the local Maasai name Nai'posha, meaning "rough water" because of the sudden storms which can arise.
Lake Naivasha is a haven for birds and hippos. We took a boat tour with an expert guide who put us right on the birds, over 40 species. Plus, we got a good look at several hippos.
