There are over 1000 elephants to admire in Amboseli with each individual named, numbered, or coded and can be recognized individually. The local people are mainly Maasai, but people from other parts of the country have settled here attracted by the successful tourist-driven economy and intensive agriculture along the swamps making this low-rainfall area one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in the world.
Amboseli is also home to incredible birdlife with 400 species of birds including water birds like pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hamerkop and 47 raptor species.
Amboseli National Park, formerly Maasai Amboseli Game Reserve, is a national park in Kajiado County. The park is a 96,000 acre ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border.
Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with sulphur springs, the savannah and woodlands. They can also visit the local Maasai community who live around the park and experience their authentic culture.
